I was killing some time before leaving to hit the tide and was going through some of my greenie. I think I found this about a year ago and thought it was a wheatie.

After looking a little closer I could tell it wasn't and cleaned it up. Low and behold it's a 1863, Benjamin Franklin " a penny saved is a penny earned" Civil War token.

Granted it's in rough shape but still a nice find. Just goes to show, we have to look a little closer at our finds before we throw them in the scrap pile.

Very nice find, fsa46; I'd love to find a token like that.

I feel very fortunate to live in New England, ( Connecticut ) , we have so much history and we can never tell what we'll dig up, whether in the dirt, sand/rocks or water. I love finding the old stuff and know I'm not alone.

Great unexpected treasure - I really like those!

I tumbled some pennies last month, and found a 1907 barber dime mixed in. What really bothers me is I'm not sure where I found it.

Where you hunt, it was probably found not far from the house. I know we have found many in that area.

Same here found an 1864 indian head penny in my uncleaned collection tin but have no clue where I picked it up at. They are not common in sw fla. I think I found it inland in Sarasota county?
