I was headed to the beach that I was at yesterday, then at the last minute, I decided to go back to where I found my last gold ring. I was armed with my new scoop to ensure those deep targets would not elude me with the watery sand trying to fill up the hole.

I was down at the waterline as the tide was still going out and finding a few deep whisper targets. The beach has healed itself after the storm/high surf several days ago and targets were few and far between. So I headed to the other side of the beach.

This side of the beach has very find sand, this wet sand gets packed really tight, and is very hard to scoop with a swing type scoop. I rarely detected this side because it was almost impossible to scoop that very fine hard packed sand more then six inches or so with a swing scoop. Today was different and my new step-on scoop went down fast and deep.

After digging most of the targets on that plate, I saw and heard the deep faint High/Low Tone whisper on the ATX. The visual sign on the ATX was the LED's bouncing between 1-2 LED's out of the 13 total LED's.

The 14k Gold Ring with the Purple Stone (8.38 grams) was Deep! I mean, Real Deep! It was beyond 14", but I can't say how much deeper. The length of the blade on my step-on scoop is 12" and it was well beyond that.

If it wasn't for the ATX and my new scoop, I would have never heard the ring or been able to retrieve it. It's only a matter of time before I start finding gold chains.

I will be hunting that area of the beach a lot more as it is a very popular swimming beach.

Thanks for Looking ... HH

Never seen a gold ring with GL after the karat mark...some references say it stands for gold layered and they have more gold on them than plated rings. :dontknow:

Yeah. I saw that and before the 14k it has "0X". I don't know what that means also.

Hi lookindown,

I like the scoop a lot because I can scoop deeper with less work with the waves going in and out. Although, it is slower scooping and target retrieval with a step-on scoop vs a swing type scoop.
With my swing scoop, I can shake the wet sand out. If the target is small and falls through the scoop, I shake the scoop over the coil so I know when it drops, then look at the ground with my headlamp.
With a load of wet sand in my new scoop, it's too heavy to shake, so I slide the sand out in a half moon pattern, then scan the pattern, then slide the sand with my foot until I can see the target. If I'm in the wave action, I let the water do the work.

Overall, I don't know how I managed without it :)
