This is my thoughts and opinions and many others will prolly have other thoughts but here we go.
Machine: X-terra 705 (hate it but still love it as it produces alot of finds)
Modifications: Lower shaft has been shortened by 5 inches, top shaft over arm cuff cut off as a small piece was sticking out after cuff and it annoyed me. see picute below with red arrow.
Hunting ground:Saltwater beaches, Drysand, some wet sand (its ok on wet sand but its not great and i would not recomend it for wet saltwater, just get a real beach machine)
It's not that stable on saltwater beaches on wet sand and its a big drawback but u can crank down the sens and get it to work or if u can handle some chatter and learn whats a real target and whats a ghost signal u can use it pretty good at wet sand too. On Dry sand its a beast however.

Con's: hate the handle. upper shaft is stuck and cannot be removed and have been like that for over a year, prolly from lack of maintaince and sand or something got into a hole or two but it is totally my fault for not maintaining it proper.
Pro's: i like the menus and functions on it. It got all i need. Its easy to learn. I like the options to change the frequency simply by changing coils.
I love this machine and i will continue using it untill it dies on me.

Digging tool:Self painted 10$ shovel haha

It's hard to call it between these 2 machines! Sov GT on the left and Excal with Grey Ghost headphone and pp mods. Rear mount carbon fiber 3 piece shaft by Plugger. Currently using an 8" Trex sand scoop and 5" RTG mini pro scoop.

Older blue Excal with full mods, Equinox 800.

My old blue Excal with headphone mod, PP mod, and cable connector so I can swap coils. This gives me complete and reliable versatility so I can adapt my setup to just about any environment or set of circumstances I might encounter on the beach. Now if I could just back to actually using it again! :BangHead: :laughing7:

My AT Pro. It is all that I know but I love it. I am not a big fan of the head set though. Definitely want to get a pair of wireless ones.

Surprised, that the CTX 3030 did not make your selection criteria cut off?

Details on the Mods, especially the connectors and precautions taken to protect them.
I would like to build a similar troll house, most likely using my XCal ll, as there seems to be a housing shortage,
Hard to find an Old Blue, in good enough condition, that is not overpriced!
Until, I am able to build, I am voting Yes, on rent control for trolls!

Connectors.....there are a few options but if you routinely hunt in harsh environments then "they all require constant maintenance and additional safeguards,"....but even so it's still the best single mod I have applied because it makes one machine totally versitle to almost any hunting situation. As for the other mods, I had OBN build me a set of custom headphones and also install the PP switch, also fantastic improvements.

As for the troll, I just got back from the beach and I think I have this newest mod pretty close to being dialed in now. No gold today but a pretty fair silver day. :laughing7:

Was out today at the beach for the first time this yr. still ice and snow along the shore but got to use my new Indiana scoop I ordered back in Jan. The scoop works excellent. Was digging in some hard packed wet sand today, no problem at all. Of course, leaning on my scoop is one of my favourite detectors, the AT Pro. Cheers everyone and HH!
