Florida's gold was safe from me

worst trip to Fla. Ive ever had
would like to thank everyone that invited me to hook up - most were for places 2+ hrs from where I stayed
and my gal was doing all the driving - so I did not want her to have to do a 2+ there and 2+ back when she was there to get some rest and sun
arrived on sunday before low tide - but winds were around 20mph and waves were high - no one was in the water
I walked in to check bottom - no viz and I was getting tossed - so gave up on trying to hunt
went back to room and got my new mask to try out in the pool - test was pretty good
you can breathe thru you nose and/or mouth - only negative was your mouth breathing heats up the mask - nothing you can do about that
in cold conditions - this might be a positive
I went across the pool - dove to bottom and made like I was fanning for a target - on the way back to other side - saw $1 bill on the bottom
snagged it and surfaced - looked around and there was a couple like 30 feet away - both wearing bathing suits so figured they did not lose it
swam to the side where my gal was sitting she came over and I handed it to her - told her mask was pretty good told her I was going to play around some more with it
dove back under and saw another bill on the bottom - it was a $10 - surfaced and looked around - I was alone in pool now - dove back under and found a room card key
went back to my gal and handed her the 10 - I went along the side of the pool to people sunning and asked if anyone lost their room key - everyone checked and they said they all had theirs - so we returned it to the desk
Monday - - winds had died over night a little - they were still like 10-15mph - not as many big waves but water was still rough - I jumped in before low
and walked like chest deep to the south - looked for hard bottom but never found any - headed back to area in front of my resort and hit a small patch where I was getting some rocks and shells
viz was still zero - could not see my coil or scoop but I was finding coins in a small stretch - some were deep and brown and green so I knew no o ne had been there in a little while - I expected to find some gold but not to be - I was hurting from kidney stone and got out earlier than I'd planned to get a pain killer
I was hurting whole time down there - and was living off pain killers all the while - I did not get much sleep - was hoping if I got into some gold - would take my mind off some of the pain
getting bashed around by waves and rough waters didn't help
Tuesday- winds picked up again - stopped by South beach and no one was in water - largest waves ive ever seen there - moved on to a more sheltered back up spot
not much better - roughest water Ive seen there too - no viz again and was just finding a lot of new pennies - moved after about an hour and got into a spot with a little viz and a little calmer
started finding other coins besides pennies - a lot were deep and in hard soil and clay - so had to work for them - ended up with at least one silver quarter (have to check others)
thought I might get gold with the coins I was finding but No
Wednesday - decided to give South bch a try again - only surfers in the water - I got in and got battered - kept getting knocked off good targets
hit a few spots with coins but just to hard to hunt - rip currents pushing me one way and pulling in another - got out and headed north
jumped out of car at a few spots and ran to water to find a spot - finally after 4th try - found a spot where far out sand bar/reef was knocking down the waves enough
got in and started finding coins - many were in hard bottom that was under about 4 ins of sand - which was a good sign - I hit a few small spots that held a fair amount of coins
still no viz - still getting pushed around - hunting was still no picnic but I was finding more good than bad
cold front was moving in and air temp dropped - my gal I knew wanted to head out - started to head back and got blast - ended up being large silver band - checked around that area
hoping there might be some gold too - but No
item to right of $10 bill - I thought was junk - but it has loupes and flowers on it - its silver and is like a tube - other half is missing (had I known it was some sort of jewelry -would have looked for chain and other half) will have to work on it - it has a small plastic bag in it - might be coke or crack holder
Thursday woke up early hoping to get out one last time - waves and winds were high again and went back to bed
gave it the ole college try but came up short - had some good food and 80 degree weather beat the 40s back home
was hoping to end this year on a high note but not to be - don't know if I'll be doing any cold water hunting in Dec. so this might have been my last times out for 2014
Hope all had a great holiday - Good luck to all for the rest of this year !

It's been really sanded in all year, going to take some serious winter stuff to thin it down.

Yeah, I knew you were in for some bad weather...hunting in rough water takes the fun out of it for me...at least you got to hunt and get out of that cold Northern weather for a bit...thanks for the report and pics.

Kidney stones are no joke, I was immobilized my first round of those. I hope for a speedy recovery for you. It's been tough on the eastern shore wave intervals are close together making a real tough go at water recovery. Glad you found some stuff though.

Nothing being found on the Cape. I had to go to RI to find clad and silver. My detecting partner did manage silver and one gold with 10 diamonds. A great day just before the fresh water iced over. I sure hope the winds, waves and storms move all the piled up sand on the east coast to the west///might need a mighty big blow, but one can dream...

Trust you are not in the the lake affect snow zone...Unbelievable 7 feet of snow in just a few hours...

Lot of wind and swell changes thru Dec looks like. Moves things around a little, but it sure makes you have to man up to get out there. Looks like the CTXs are leaving us the pennies now days.....like we needed to dig more of them. Hopefully you enjoyed some of your time in the sun.

Sorry we didn't meet up and your trip and weather timing didn't match. I went to south beach yesterday and started to go in the water but realized it was best to hunt the wet sand and even that was rough so I moved up to the dry just to find some clad and toys. Water was rough and wind temp in the 60's blowing at 15 to 18 miles per hour.

Casper how did you like the mask?

I saw it when it was first released in Europe - I wanted to try one but they were only sold in a few sports stores abroad
I told my girlfriend that they were selling them in Portugal and that when she goes next year maybe she can look for one
I did not know a friend of her family was coming over for a few weeks and she had asked him to find one - he picked mine up
for like $40 and brought it over in his carryon and she surprised me with it while I was packing
You can find them on ebay - some places asking outrageous prices but some are coming down
first jumped in with it - it slowly fogged - I took it off and spit in it and that helped - instructions said to use dish liquid which I used to use in some of mine
you spread thin coating and rinse and lasts all day - I did not try hunting with it yet - water was so rough - I think it would have played havoc with that snorkel
but my headphones fit no prob with it on
your breathe mask it hot eventually - negative in hot weather - positive probably in cold
told my gal - would be good for someone with dentures - so im all set when I get older
all and all - I liked it - would be ideal in clear carribean waters

Casper,
I'm sorry that we had to get tactical prior to your arrival but when you announced that you were headed down we added truck loads of sand to keep our beaches safe. Thank you for spending some money while you visited!
......you know I'm just kidding buddy!

Casper, You did better than I did on the west coast of Florida this week. A couple of 2 hour hunts yielded more pull tabs than I've dug on the East Coast ALL YEAR! Very few good targets to be had over there, plus the sand is as hard as concrete and the water is very murky. Glad to be back east to my soft sand and clear water, but I did enjoy meeting BigWaveDave and hunting with him for a bit. 11-27-2014 a.m. @ Estero Island.jpg

I actually won at the casino down there and didn't spend much money
and a few spots I hit weren't sanded in at all - it was just rough water

Well that's good on the casino winnings, I'm sure the sunshine and palm trees made up for it anyway. Glad you got to and from safely. By the way thanks for the info in the PM, I appreciate it!
