Truth is, I'm still educating myself about the different tones of my Excal 1000 and still dig up most everything - even just to see if my ears are getting smarter. Lots of bottle caps, pull tabs, junk jewelry and plenty loose change. The other day while on a two hour hunt at a nearby popular swim beach, I finally found my first gold and silver rings! The gold is probably low karat and the silver is 925. So cool seeing them come up in the scoop...
Happy hunting y'all!

Congrats! I found my first silver ring earlier this year and now have 2. I found my 1st gold ( 14k w/ 3 small diamonds) just 4 days ago! It's a great hobby that offers good exercise and time to think & be alone! You have a great machine that will serve you well in the future! HH & Happy trails!

Thanks Golden Oaks and congrats on your finds! It really is a great hobby and you meet some great people doing it. The other day I was digging and digging in about a foot of water with my crappy scoop (the next upgrade), when a fellow MDer walked by (with an Xcal II) and offered to let me use his big Stavr scoop. I had that penny up in two scoops! He got a good laugh that I need to learn the sound of a penny, but also gave me some great advice on tones and Xcal settings and let me try out his balanced straight shaft. Really nice of him.

Don't change a thing. Dig all non-ferrous sounds, always. You'll find some interesting jewelry that way.

Congratulations on the two ring finds! "Cudamark" is correct; dig everything non-ferrous in the water.

Hey SandyBottoms,
Congrats on the gold and silver find! Like others have said here dig all non iron targets you never really know till its in your scoop. This is my second season and I use the Excal II and gotta say and I'm still learning every time I go out.
All that being said Bklyn used to be my stomping ground back in the day. NY has the best pizza and I miss it.

Leave pennies and you will leave gold and silver...and other interesting stuff...great scores...that silver ring is awesome and gold is always great.

Personally, with my excal, I don't bother with learning the tones between coins and gold. I thought I learned deep bottle caps but I have a new rule: if it's a medium to faint in PP and it doesn't null , I dig it. If it is a solid tone but garbled and kinda sketchy its prob a cap but I pull it. If it's a low inconsistent growl its aluminum . But I may pull it. .. are you getting the idea? If it pinpoints and it doesn't null, I pull it! !. Don't walk away from what you assume is a penny. Prob is but what if its not? 18k.. anyone can pull obvious in your face tones. Its those whispers and faints that give you and your excal the advantage. Hunt in pp, isolate in discrim.
