Can’t Metal Detect for Only 3 Hours…Lesson Learned

Ok, My wife and I had our first fight about metal detecting. I wanted to go metal detecting for only 4 hrs Sunday afternoon; 2 hrs before and 2 hrs after low tide at 3:30pm. That would have made it around 5:30pm, when she would have to pick me up from the beach, a ½ hr drive. Too late she replied, in an unusually harsh and gravely voice. Can you make it 4:30? I thought - that would give me only 3 hrs of actual metal detecting and decided I just couldn’t do it. Not enough time.

When I metal detect, time really flies. I mean, I’ll start metal detecting for 5-7 hrs and BOOM! Times up. I’ll have forgotten to eat or drink (and sometimes even pee) simply because perceived time went so fast!
Now back to the wife: it is bad enough that 5 hrs go by in an hour when I’m on the beach or in the surf metal detecting. But metal detect for only 3 hrs? That converts to only about 36 minutes of perceived metal detecting…just not enough time. I would have just gotten into the grove of things when time is up. I decided to stay home and take care of my sick wife with her bad cold…I’ll metal detect tomorrow.

Update: Just after completing the above and just before posting it, I read a recent post by Baywatcher (Feb 19th) who went out detecting “…for 3 hours…” and found this beautiful diamond and gold ring in dry sand at a beach also on the west coast of Florida. Lesson learned! For now on, I’ll go detecting if I have the chance, even if for “only” 3 hrs.

I aint sayin I never warmed up the ocean or watered a dune, mind you. Its just that ime, getting old = more remembering to pee more often. Or maybe I'm just more careful about staying fully hydrated- yeah, that's it.

I don't know about you guys but if I went detecting even for half an hour and my wife was sick with a bad cold and I asked her to pick me up, I would never hear the end of it, only if I made a spectacular ring find! Good Luck!

Man, i have similar situation few days ago-no my wife was not sick but... I got a call from my hunting buddy to go and check some beaches , conditions were good ,previously day
we find 7 gold rings so it reasonable to expect that few more left there . And then she told me that she need me to go to grocery market with her, i was so pissed!I know she can do it by herself but i didn't have any real choice have I . I call my hunting buddy cancel the trip, and go with her to grocery shop, after all family is always at fist place .My hunting buddy goes of course but he didn't find any gold i am pretty much sure that if i go i will not find any as well because she will curse me together with my metal detectors.
Now the moral point of the story last night come back from 5h of detecting with just some euro coins. Dinner was not ready yet so i decided to go to local beach 150 m from my home .This beach is not really popular anymore since it is at the end of the port and locals don't use it any more , only couple of tourist. It was low tide but most of the beach was covered with rocks so i have only around 40x2m of beach to hunt.
When i find first gold ring i was surprised , when i find second one only few meters further i was shocked but when find 3rd one i was calm since i was expecting it.
At that beach i never find more than 1 gold ring per hunt and now in only 1h at merely poor conditions i got 3 of them. I will make a new thread with finds latter.
Moral is that family should always be at first place but if u get even 1h to detect go and get it !

I've found a solution:

The wife of my mate Aquaman has become a good friend of my wife.

When we want to detect, we propose them to enjoy a restaurant or a shopping afternoon. It's not a cheap solution but it works and motivates us to make some good finds

I feel bad for you guys. My wife is a self employed, workaholic, and I retired, so I go where I want when I want............................until a little after 5 pm, when she gets home!

Now THAT Video and poem really put a big smile on my face...even my wife laughed!!! And, yes, I also see myself in the video when it comes to metal detecting.
When metal detecting, enjoy the moment, the finds are secondary (but nice).

I can detect anytime I want and my wife don't care. I can't always control where I am at when I have to P though. I have been known to drop to my knees a few times and pretend I am digging a target while looking to see if anyone is watching. At 71 I can't hold like i once did.
