Hi guys,

Today I found my first gold ring at the beach after the woman who runs the beach chairs told me an old woman lost her wedding ring there on the weekend. The area she mentioned was very small, maybe ten by ten meters - that's about one square inch and 12°F at a pressure of 120psi if I did the math correctly - and after only ten minutes or so I was actually able to find and retrieve the ring. It was right on top of a pulltab and besides an iron nail, even the NEL Snake I was using had trouble separating the targets, but I was digging everything in that area anyway because it was so small and I really wanted to find that ring.

This is the first gold I have ever found, and even though I handed it in to the woman to forward it to her guest I'm still super happy to have found it, judging by the engraved date her anniversary is only two weeks away so I'm pretty sure she is as happy as I am.

It's an 18k and most likely worth a small fortune, but hey, a smile beats numbers on your bank account.

Here is the picture, and two more shots that I think turned out quite well:

What a good deed you've done! Both of you will never forget it. It happened to me and I gave a ring to its owner. Also, I lost my high school ring many years ago and if it showed up at my door I would bee sooo happy!

Hi,
it is fine, that you found and returned it.
The question in such scenarios is always - can you trust the person in the middle to return such valuable item and not to keep it?
In such cases I prefer to contact the person who lost it directly, otherwise you might be the guilty one by handing it to the wrong person.

Here in Germany the chair renters are eager too, to get a found ring to their hands instead of having it reported to the finds office. Even the finds office usually gets only a report from me containing the description, material and the name and year from the engraving on a wedding ring. The true loser will know the exact date from the engraving for sure.
The law in Germany here sees, that you are entitled for a certain percentage of the value as finders fee, and if the person who lost it did not contact the finds office, the item belongs to the finder after 6 month. (And why would I want to transfer this potential privilege to another person...)

Best greetings from Germany
Olaf

In this case it all went well and I got a finder's fee but I agree, it was a risk.
