I wonder what a 3D graph (carat weight x signal strength x depth) of those readings would look like.

It shows you that size and weight matters, and that gold can be all over the place on the conductive side of the scale. Mixed metals (depending on which combination of metals) can give you a different ferrous reading too.

I don't get it. the numbers were all about the same with a CM down in the corner. When he waves the ring across the coil it looks like the machine is only giving the distance to the coil 12.12 cm isn't that about 5-6 inches?

12cm is just short of 4 3/4" That won't mean much in an air test. The variety of conductive numbers was what he was demonstrating.

What I got from it was that the target ID on the conductive was a lot higher on larger bits of gold, in past I always thought the numbers were sub 20.

Clearly this is not the case.

Also all of the numbers on ferrous scale are around 12.

On fresh drops.....yes. Lower karat gold and gold that gets encased in highly mineralized soil/sand can read a bit off on both scales.

I detect in sea water so its pretty highly mineralised, the only time I had something encased was a gold pocket watch where the dial had rusted and covered most of the back with minerals and crusted sand. Luckily I saw a bit of gold shinny through when I washed it off.
The back was 18k.

When you say a bit off, can you clarify.

thanks

Some of our beaches have a lot of iron in the sand. I've found iron encased gold at the beach that had ferrous numbers in the single digits. Also, jewelry with other metals will be all over the place.....some higher than normal ferrous and conductive numbers and some lower than normal depending on which metals are present with the gold. Some lower karat gold (like 9 and 10k gold) will corrode and read several numbers off on both scales.

If you dig enough 09-05's at the beach, you eventually will.

They were all small 10k or less gold. Some where rings, some earrings or charms. Once they're out of the ground and get cleaned up, they read normal again. I've had a few mixed metal jewelry items read way off. One was a gold ring with an inlay of a meteorite! That thing read iron all the way. As for photos, I didn't make a notation of which items read off and which didn't, so, it would just be a guess at this point. If I get another one, I'll try to remember to post it.
