I found a square nail with a square head, still embedded in a piece of wood I assume is from a ship. NJ coast. Anyone know how old this could be and how should I preserve this intact so the wood doesn't deteriorate further. I can just let it dry at first. This was also an area with lots of copper sheathing pieces.

Id say at least from the 1800s - its hard to date them
got a friend that hunts Nj bchs in the winters and has over 1000 of them
is cool that its still in the wood - you should check that spot out more
he has gotten some other nice relics from those bchs where he gets them
some nice coins too

I found a hand made brass nail in a piece of worm eaten wood several years ago on the beach. I don't think I ever posted but probably should have. I left the patina on the brass and painted the whole thing with exterior urethane. It has held up well with no further deterioration. That should work for you once the wood is good and dry.
