I've got one on my To Hunt list that has been in operation since the 1800s. On public property too. I'll let ya know when I get to it.

I found this one while doing historical research for swimming holes and just stumbled onto it. Checked with a local who confirmed that the local small Baptist Church still uses it, even when theres snow on the ground.

I hit more than a few over the yrs (most are at old bch sites)
- high concentration of relig.medals at most
you might get info from very old priests or older towns folk - find some 90+ yr olds and
ask them - nearest pond or lake to an old church would be good start

If your lucky you'll get a few silver ones - last year I went back to a spot that like 100 relig. medals were found
between myself and a few others - I managed to pull one more big silver one from there down deep - along with a few gold rings :icon_thumright:
Good Luck

I did get a few silver ones but it was rare. and yes they were larger then the little oval brass ones.
but actually I believe all the silver ones I found were ww2 era made to wear by wives or girlfriends
of soldiers.

I sort of think the little oval ones were either carried in, or thrown in during baptisms,
in order to convince them the water turned into holy water for the event.
just a guess of course, but would make sense for the large quantities.
if they purposely littered the place with them.

Place is no longer available to search.
is now a County Park & off limits to removal of anything
but fish in season.

I have a small dam, within walking distance of me.
used at least once in my lifetime for the purpose.
I was very Young at the time. Not sure what church.
but on Private Property , now owned by a Greedy %$^&*#$ Land Baron

Some of the local history books of your area will mention places where baptisms took place. I located several in a county I'm interested in, but just no time to contact the owners and seek permission, much less time to detect this year.

If you can find one at the beach, you really get a variety. For all you Californiaites. Corona Del Mar South side of the jetty. There's a big rock in the middle of the beach, sticks up from null tide to low tide. Used to find next to nothing in the dry but in a trough in front of the rock jack pot. Got smart and left the detector in the truck & just used a modified beach cart (you oldsters know what I'm talking about). Found out that Calvary Chapel did most all of their baptisms there since the early days when they were in the circus tent. In the cave inside the jetty some called it pirate cove, we'd find stuff back in the caves from the tourists pocket spills. Funny, they'd drop everything in their pockets trying to find non-existent pirate dabloons back inside! And the weird stuff like a pair of very expensive wing tip shoes. The pictures those made in my imagination.......

I would be a little funny about finding stuff at one of those spots... If I found a Silver or Gold Christian Metal, I would be compelled to give it back to the local church.

I don't think they belonged to the church.
My guess the silver & gold ones(if gold exist)were purchased at Jewelers or the PX
on an army Base. and belonged to a priest/preacher or other very religious someone who bought it & no longer exists.

not being a church person of course, I'm just guessing Churches
don't spend big bucks on their followers .
They just hold out a collection plate.

I find Many Silvers but a few gold each year..these are from 2015...All of these were donate to a Sunday school teacher who is a friend of mine (And a hunting partner) who gives them to his students, not to the church. Ever few years I will give him a handful, instead of them setting around in my treasure chest they are back to where they belong.

I've been busy all day taking my cousin to the hospital for thyroid surgery. She's walking around in a trance now that I have her home.

But, before I went, I found one on the Internet near me. That's one to hit :)

Good luck!!

Well, you've certainly given me something to think about my friend - joy of discovery versus rightful distribution. Sometimes we are deeply Christian but unseeing. I have counted 13 churches near that river. I know sometimes we have to give back.

I just did that with the bracelet tag, and so far zero response from the son of the bracelet's father. I do want to see that happen. There's sometimes more joy in giving back than keeping.

Makes me think of the place where my daughter and ex-son-in-law were baptized. Was a sloped section of the river in the area where they live and you just walked down a sloped shore from the road. Not sure if it still in use and don't think it was posted, research time. The MX Sport could do okay in the fresh water there and it was no more than waist deep there. If an open site and not used, why not???

Yes Jeff, you're used to the Explorer, so picking up an Excal speaks the same kind of language :)
