    Spanish Cob Pendant - Sad

Found this yesterday during a morning beach hunt. Looked like a treasure hunter had his prized find made into a pendant. I was thinking wow, some poor sap found this on the beach and then lost it years later only to be found by another treasure hunter. I don't take my reading glasses while on the beach, so I didn't realize it was a cheap tourist copy until I got back to the truck and saw the obvious seam. Disappointing to say the least. Looks like an imitation of a Spain Philip II gold Cob Escudo ND (1556-98) Seville mint. Wonder why they put the 1822 date on it?

Dont feel bad I found 3 last year alone. There is also one simalar to yours posted in the shipwreck forum for identification. Still gives the instsnt adrenal boost when first dug. My son has quite the collection of fantasy cobs now !!

I pulled one of those out of the sand in the lower keys ocean side a few years back, but without the pendant. I knew it was crap when I first saw it in the scoop, but when I rubbed it and saw what it was, it did make me do a triple take. So, so very wrong to find one of those in the ocean, especially in the keys.

    Spanish Cob Pendant - Sad

Copy coins usually need to say “copy” or some indicator that makes it being a copy obvious. In this case it’s the completely wrong date of 1822. Otherwise it’d be considered a counterfeit.
