Found a 10k ring with 3 possible diamonds, 8 quarters, 7 dimes, bunch of pennys, a square spike, small piece of copper, lure and lead sinker. Last week I found several larger pieces of what I think is copper. Would the 1715 fleet have had copper sheathing on the hull? The ring has a few little crustaceans on it that I need advice on how to clean.

Hey, nice looking ring. One way (most of the time) to tell if the stones are diamonds or junk/glass/etc., is to look at the back of the stones; if there is an opening at the back of each stone to let light shine from behind than it is a diamond. If there are no holes behind the stones than they are NOT diamonds (and prob pasted-in).

Nice Ring and Hunt. Love it when the greenies show up. Usually leads to the yellow stuff. Careful posting the spots you hunt unless you like company. Nice Work

Thanks for all of the input. Any thoughts on best way to clean the small crustaceans from the ring, maybe soak in vinegar?

You could try soaking it in lemon juice or as a last resort acetone. Acetone not recommended for plated jewelry.

By the way, the beach was littered with flat irregular pieces of iron that was silver dollar size and smaller, any thoughts on where these come from?

Hey Steve,
Nice find..... Take a toothpick and try and scrape off the debris. A little warm soapy water also helps.... Go on Ebay and buy yourself a diamond tester. They are cheap and work well. You don't have to sit around wondering if they are real stones or not...:happysmiley:

Doubt they are real on a 10k, but one way to tell ... exhale on the stones to "fog them up". Glass will fog up easily.. real stones hard to fog.

You might consider picking up a cheap diamond tester. I have one I got off of amazon and it works great once you figure out the chinese instructions.

Do the cheap diamond testers on ebay work, worth the $15 investment?
