I've used the stock Minelab dive rod. It seems to work fine. The hardest part was winding the cable tight enough to get it all on the rod. I don't see any need for a specialty rod, like carbon fiber, as weight isn't much of an issue underwater. They are kind of nice looking and won't corrode however. I have both Plugger and Anderson carbon fiber long shaft setups for beach hunting. I like both, but, slightly prefer the Plugger. You might also check with Sgoss66 on here. He makes some nice carbon fiber shafts for some Minelab models.

CAnt go wrong with an Andersons....... they really make some good light weight CF shafts.
