Don't know how far south your willing to go....to have water calm enough to hunt in you need to go to south Florida, say West Palm Beach Ft.Lauderdale and south.

Long Island has some great beaches if you don’t want to travel too south. Jones beach, Southampton, Long Beach or if you prefer rockier beaches, the north shore. Jones has a large Bay Area, as well. All great for reading as well! It’s nicer during the week, rather then weekends

I haven't detected Cape May beaches, but I'd like to combine a MD trip there with seeing the horseshoe crabs come ashore at night to lay their eggs. I have heard local MD clubs view the beaches there possessively.

Cape May is a definite possibility. Can you elaborate on the local MD clubs?

You got to take your detector ...sneak it in...the first thing she is going to say when you get there is you should have brought your detector.

I've read on this site that there is at least one club that views Cape May as their own beach and can be hostile to newcomers. Enter Cape May in the search box at the upper right on this page and it should take you to the threads - as recently as this past winter.
