Barracuda Attacks Excal In The Water

My friend and I went detecting yesterday in South Florida. I was out up to my neck when I saw my friend trying to get out of the water. At first I thought there was a shark or that he had been bitten by one. Well it turns out that a barracuda attacked and bit his coil. We believe that it was the yellow on the coil that made him go for it. Not only did the barracuda go for it he wouldn't let it go. He continued to pursue the coil until my friend exited the water. After that a swimmer had the same experience with the cuda who probably was attracted to his silver chain. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

Yes......they ghost up on me alot in the keys. They like the yellow moving back an forth in a little sand cloud. But never had one actually bite. More than a few I've chased off when they come in to look at the coil.

Man.....the silver chain is a no no......dosen't happen often, but.....imagine even a smaller 10 12 pound barracuda slamming into your wind pipe teeth first !! The only way I've herd of people getting bit is fishing, feeding them, and wearing shiny jewelry in the water.

Back in the day, snorkeling in Guantanamo Bay, swimming parallel to shore, the huge, 5 to 6 ft. barracudas would swim up to you when you entered there little turf, snap their jaws and follow until you left their small territory. Then they would peel off, to be replaced by the next guy, who would snap his jaws and escort you through their spot. If you stopped to look at something, they would become agitated, circle you, snap more furiously. We learned to just keep moving. I think you found a very territorial 'cuda.

I just got an idea for a new type of fishing lure.

I've dived with them and they never bothered me. They sometimes hang out in packs and are very curious fish and like to check out what you are doing.
Never wear jewelry in the water including watches with shiny metal. And never earrings.
Biscayne Bay in miami has many barracuda that inhabit the weed beds and sand holes.

Ive been around them here and there over the years - remember one in deep water that was at a "cleaning station" it was hanging straight up and down and
tiny fish were picking all the parasites and old bits of food from its mouth and gills - thing was longer than 6ft
I was in water once with my mask and snorkel trying to get some under water pics but storm came in and muddied up the water - i couldnt barely see my hand in front of my face
started to swim in and had one snap right in front of my mask - inches from the glass - he must have gotten a reflection of the lens and thought it was a fish - woke me up
most ive encountered are solitary but i came about a huge school maybe like 50 of them - all about 3 footers maybe a few leading the pack around 4+
i was detecting in chin deep water in Bahamas - mask & snorkel on - swinging away and got feeling that i was being watched - turned to my right and looked into deeper water and saw
bunch of eyes staring at me - i was like "holly crap!" . Now normally if i have one getting to close...i will poke at them with my coil or scoop and eventually they will shy
away. I did that with that school and i think they came closer - Thought i heard laughing and one of them say..."What? ...is this guy kidding...Hey... one of you guys in the back
go over there and bite him in the ass". cause they did not spook. i kept one eye on them and one eye on the shore as i slowly worked my way in cause they looked like they
meant business - they looked hungry. Now Ive never heard of a pack of them attacking anyone...but I did not want to be the first. I have swam with sharks and was never
afraid but these guys were intimidating.
I have been at a few beaches in Fla. and especially in the Keys where I heard "Some woman was attacked yesterday... she had a barracuda rip her chain and gold
medallion off her neck and she had a cut on her throat" and heard of another that got her finger half bit off cause it tried to get her diamond ring
my GF doesnt wear anything shiny in the water.

ship happens on the water, and a beautiful day can go wrong quick. I'm sure that cuda wasnt trying to hit her......but it happens to a few people each year. Be careful everyone !!

My spearfishing partner had his wooden speargun bitten just about in half by a barracuda many years ago he was swimming through a white water area and it attacked the shiny stainless steel of the trigger mechanism. Luckily his hand wasn't on the trigger at that moment.
