Also according to the report the life guards left their stations, that should have been a clue.

By chance, I once watched a lighting bolt leave a lonely thunderhead in an otherwise clear blue sky, travel against that blue sky at least ten miles horizontally, before making a sharp turn and striking the ground. I say I watched it, it was instantaneous, of course. I had heard of such a thing, but had never seen it before...or since. A bolt out of the blue is real. Take shelter.
