Went to Holmes Beach on Anna Maria Island, FL today to dig up a chest of gold coins. Our satellite guy provided us with the research and location. He also sent us a scan that looked like a box shape. We also had GPS numbers. I had a six man digging crew of seasoned diggers. We got a hit with the Pulse Star Pro II detector and it showed non-ferrous. We got down to six feet fast but then we hit water. We widened the hole and went down another foot but the water kept rushing in faster than we could bail it. Four Sheriffs Dept. deputies stopped by to watch and then reminded us to fill in our hole before we left. So we couldn't use a dredge or a motorized auger. Holmes 1.JPG

This is how close we were to the waters edge.

Here is Joe checking the hole with our Aquapulse with the 14" coil.

This is the deepest we got.

We determined the chest was 11' deep and there was no way we could reach it with simple hand tools.

Remember, he did say "non-ferrous".

Another 3-4' below the water line to the top of the item? The following might be feasible.
I'm not sure if it would work to go deep enough but I use plywood as a psuedo-cofferdam when digging deck posts near the water.
We dug 4' to the water table and then another 2' as the posts needed to be 6-7' deep. Multiple layers (reducing the width slightly) that you add as the depth increases. Holes cut in the plywood to make extraction possible by hand or rope. Add screws as needed for stability.

Use a pump to remove water and sand from the hole?
ps. My future great grandson had no role in drawing the images. :laughing7: That's all on me.

You might use a 2” pvc pipe but would need a way to clear the sand out and a way to get it down that far ... then a sewer cam to see what ya got before a LOT of time and money gets invested.

My mom had a house on Anna Maria Island, and I loved staying there. Just walk across the road and there is the beach.

I am curious why you think it's a chest of gold? I agree with the others it could be almost anything.

In 2009 I helped the local Sheriff dept. in their search of the missing woman.
We were trying to find her bridge work.
It was a surreal time actually, I'd detect a few targets, they had a backhoe to dig them up.
I see that the guy finally told them of the actual spot her placed her.
