going to florida for vacation

Im from ohio and just got a used excalibur for hunting the state parks and quarries locally.I also am planning a trip to florida in late may or early june.Will be spending a few days in st pete then off to disney for a few days,then plan on going to atlantic coast for 2-3 days.Any ideas on which beaches might be good around that time of year.Any tips on the excal or places to hunt while im in florioda would be greatly appreciated.Also if anyone has an excal in nw ohio and would be interested in a hunt next summer let me know..thanx and hh jon

I can only speak for Saint Petersburg, because that's where I'm from. You'll have access to the whole beach coast there and can take your pick of all the beaches... just make sure you stay between the tide line and the sand dunes. Another good place to go check out would be Fort deSoto... a little bit further than St Pete beach. Just make sure you get there in the morning and stop by the main office and ask for a FREE lifetime metal detecting pass for the park. The offices close pretty early, I think around 4pm or so. The upside to Fort deSoto would be that while your detecting, your wife & family are free to enjoy North Beach... which was ranked the Top Rated Beach in AMERICA back a few years ago!!! I had been to the park a million times growing up, mainly to fish off the 1,000 foot pier (the same pier from the movie, the Punisher) right next to the historical military fort from the late 1800's, early 1900's. I never went to that beach up until Spring Break last year with all my friends. It's gotta be one of the most beautiful beaches down there in my mind now! I hunt up and down the beach all the time. I only hunt in the surf.

Staying in-between the toe of the dune and high water line applies to the Fort Desoto Park, not the public beach. (in this area)

Go south past the Don (big pink hotel) and hit the Pass-a-grille beach. Free parking after 5pm. Lots of area to hunt, both on the beach and in the surf. There is usually a nice ridge line just off the beach. Ankle deep low tide, waist deep high. I've found lots of neat stuff on both sides of the ridge.
