Re: Incrusted Whatsit
I did the same procedure on 3 silver toe rings that I found that were very encrusted. One trick I found was to add a little baking soda, it made the process a lot faster.
I'm sure like everybody else we are dieing to know what it is!!!

Re: Incrusted Whatsit
Not sure it will help, as your ring is SOOOOOO encrusted, but electrolysis as I mentioned in an earlier reply might help.
I just posted an explanation of my home electrolysis kit and a demo of how it works here:

If you choose to go this route, I hope it helps - please keep us up to date on what you end up doing.

Re: Incrusted Whatsit
Why doesn't someone that knows jimb send him a pm.  He probably cut off instant notification of subject.  i'm sure he would be happy to tell us what it turned out to be.
I clicked on his link and he is still posting so he is still a member of the Tnet.

Re: Incrusted Whatsit
I wouldn't want anyone to loose sleep over the ring, so, I can tell already that it is just a cheap ring. Definitely a ring though! I have been cleaning these things the same way for years. Let it dry out for a few months. Then lightly tap it with a small hammer and the crust falls off easily. Then soak the ring in tarnex, which is a light acid.

Re: Incrusted Whatsit
Thank you Jim for reporting back. Some of us can finally sleep being that we were on the edge for all this time .
I would imagine it's probably a thin silver ring.
