It seems that anyone during the time that Beale goes hunting, many officials, lawyers and people of prominace all owned customs businesses. Is this a clue to the people that should be looked at Give your thoughts everyone please.

(WINK) Sounds like good research yer doing... what we DO know from Lynchburg, Va. HISTORY is that 1819 was a year of MONEY CRISIS/ECONOMIC DEPRESSION; MANY ppl lost $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ from "gains" from sales; from tobacco, slaves, and "ho's"... SO! Later, a beginning of financial recovery (+$$$$$$$$$$$$$) began. Even TJ was "hurting" at Poplar Forest, and came to Lynchburg, Va. OFTEN! Ppl of L'burg wanted to help HIM out with $$$$$$$, etc. "Custom Business"? DUNNO... MAYBE! By 1822, was the beginning of "getting back on their feet"; by 1823, the Washington HOTEL was built. The Streets were "modernized" & renamed... incredible history! (SMILE)

No many bankers, politicians, and prominent people had these houses of trade. These businesses all seem to be secondary sources of income for these people. So people like Jackson, Girard, and De Forest as politicains were dealing with privateers in one way or another. Here a great hint to some big info, of the 3 people just named find out who paid certain french privateers for protection. And with that you will come across names of 2 or 3 more key people, 2 are lawyers. These lawyers had indirect dealings with some of Laffites generals. One was involved in setting up Champ D'asile. Also an interesting tid-bit for ya, De Forest was a privateer as a young man. Look at where he becomes an ambassodor for the US. His customs house is there.
