Perhaps the following event can best explain, not only the history of the Beale cipher mystery, but also the continued clinging to many of the past and current claims of solution;
In 1623 Juan D'Rosa stood on the edge of the beach quietly eyeing the sunken vessel before him and then, just like each morning before, he proceeded to wade through the chest-deep water in route to the destroyed vessel. When he got there he boarded what little was left of her and he asked his Captain, “Captain, why do you spend each day and night here hopelessly bailing out the same ocean water?” The Captain paused his activities and he raised his head, an expression of pride deeply etched into his worn-out face, “Because it is MY sunken ship.”
