Why make mention of the unknown boarder who had stayed with Morriss “with no remuneration” unless that individual figured into the tale somehow? Think about that for a moment, now consider that a large portion of the tale is about “character” both that of Morriss and Beale, and then consider that in 1885 right down the road there is a Thomas Beale of the Jackson Ward district in Richmond who is of the correct age and same general description as the narration’s TJB? The Beale in the narration obviously knowing the character of Morriss well enough to entrust him with the alleged secret, again playing into Individual character. So, hence, was the unknown boarder……Thomas Beale? I think it’s quite possible, if not very likely.
