Well it's that of year again. Yep, Shark Pit season is over.
So let's look back at the 2009 season & add a few things up!
Over all it was another good season with a few things happening out of the water as well!
We started the year off with a new website! http://sharkpittreasures.com
A place where I can showcase the many finds from the Pit from the past & future. And a place to sell the Shark Pit T-shirts, Hats. Shark Teeth & Coins.
Then in March I was honored to have the 1881 5 dollar gold coin I found at the Pit, voted a "Best Find of 2008" by Western & Eastern magazine. They included it their March 2009 "Best OF 2008" issue & sent me a nice certificate to frame & hang. Which I did.
Also in April we took the Shark Pit Museum on the road. We set up at the Treasure Expo & Trade Show in Myrtle Beach S.C.. We had a great time & ended up winning the Predator Award for Best Relic Display!
All that and I had not even been in the water yet!!
Also new this year was the videos I shot out there in the water! I got a little Flip video camera with a water proof case at mid season. So I was able to catch the 2nd half of the season video!
I think the most memorable thing I caught video out there was the mating Crabs that I scooped up in my sifter!
Here is the Best Of The Shark Pit Video I shot!
Now let's have a look at my finds from the 27 trips I took to the Pit in the 2009 season!
I have 24 pictures to show you!
The first picture is of the many Shark teeth that come up in my scoop out there! I found 218 just this year.
The next 3 pictures are of the many Stingray teeth (41 total this year), Whale bone fragments, & other misc. teeth & bones that I find.
Then there are the many V & Buffalo nickels I find. 32 total this year!
This Buffalo came up stuck in a rock. I thought it looked cool so I left it there.
This picture shows the 55 cookie coins I found this season!
And this pictures is of the 44 tokens that came up out there!
These are some key tags that I found.
These next 3 pictures show the many Brass & Lead slugs I found. And the brass washers that were used as slugs.
OK, now you need to scroll down to see the rest of my finds!
This next picture shows some lead slugs that had real V nickels pressed in the side of them to make them look real. (but the image would then be backwards) And another fake V nickel that must have been made from a mold because the image is raised up off the coin, not pressed down into like the others.
Next picture is of 3 hem weights.
These are lead weights used for fishing. Some are no more than an old piece of lead with a hole poked in it.
Here is a collection of bullets of all calibers.
Next we have the 3 bottles that came up in my scoop this year. Usually I find many more?
Here are some misc. glass items & chips that I found over the season.
I found 4 pocket knives this year!
Here is a collection of small misc. items that I found. They sure did give a good signal!
Another collection of Misc items.
These are some toys & other stuff from this season!
Here are some jewlery items! I found a total of 13 rings at the Pit this season!
And I saved the Best Finds for last! First a gold ring that has the name "Hattie" inside it.
And a 14k Opal ring with 10 Rubys! I had it apprased at $1,200.!!
Now lets look at the lifetime grand totals after adding in the finds from this year!
Cookie Coins 513
V Nickels 211
Buffalo Nickels 187
Pennies 37
Tokens 110
Rings 60 (8 gold)
Bottles 186
StingRay Teeth 429
Shark Teeth 923
The best of these finds will now make their way in to the Shark Pit Museum!
I really enjoyed that post as I do all your shark pit excursions. The gold rings are sure nice but it wouldn't be the same without all of the other finds. I like the way you keep it all together. An old swimming spot now becomes an interesting museum display that I would pay admission to see in person!
Thank you for your dedication and bringing history alive to the people!
Dave.

Re: The Best Of The Shark Pit 2009!
Great year at the pit! Curious about your shark teeth. How large are the big ones in your photo? Also curious about which machine you mostly use at the pit. - Jim

How do you find Gold coins? Reply: 'By finding lots of Silver ones..'

Thanks! The teeth are only about 2-3". I use A Fisher CZ-20 out there!
Holy cow Rob, FANTASTIC year at the Shark Pit. That opal ring is beautiful. I remember when you posted that one.
Another of my favorites besides that Schlitz bottle is that Buff in the rock. That really is a cool find. You did forget to post one of my favorite finds of yours though. The mating Barry White crabs!!! That was a classic!
Congrats on a super year Rob,
Doug
