Re: Iceburg Hunt 12/23 - 1908-S Barber Half

Congratulations to you guys on finding that spot. I've located a similar place in my area. It was a mineral springs and recreation area in the late 1800s early 1900s. I've asked permission a couple of times to hunt the area, but so far, no success. The owner hasn't said no, but neither has he said yes. He always wants me to call back and ask again in a few weeks. I get the suspicion he wants to be there when I hunt.

Re: One and One Hundred and One at the Iceberg

Danimal, get a good pair of kneepads. They sure help me out. Those wheats do look good. Any penny that's been in the ground for years in my area looks like crap.

I don't think we'll ever come close to the sheer number of OLD silver he's found at the "Pit"...
but at least ours don't need electrolosys ;D

Dan..the "pit" is legendary..but I agree with you, its a crying shame what the salt does to beautiful silver coins...:(, but then again..those black shark teeth are phenomenal...:)

Re: Iceburg Hunt 12/23 - 1908-S Barber Half

I've heard stories like this before. "Used to be a picinic area/fair ground from 1890s-1920s" They always end the same way...tons of wheats and tons of silver. When you find one keep your eyes open and mouths closed or the reitired THrs will pound the place while your at work. We got one on the Hudson river called "Barren Island". It was a carnival/fair/amusement park from the late 1800s into the 2nd or 3rd decade of the 1900s. I tracked the place down and asked for permission...denied. She said "even if I did give you permission you wouldn't find anything, the place has been pounded for 20 years". I doubt it. Her whole tone sounded more like she's denied numerous requests for 20 years. She is about 90 years old and was quite crabby.
