Re: Find Of A Lifetime!!!!!! 1792 Half Disme!

Here's what i suspect happenned. You said that you found Union and Rebel relics at this site. This coin was probably the pocket piece of one of the senior officers or sergeants. In 1861 a man born in 1792 would have been 69 years old. Definitely not a raw recruit. The wear is consistent with circulation but since it was unusual it would not have circulated for long so wear must have occured by being carried as a pocket piece. I've found slick peace dollars that began to be carried when they were BU according to the families of the former owners. Truly awesome find. Congratulations and best wishes. exanimo, ss

Great find, for sure!

You should make the MD rags pay for your story and pictures. Why submit it to them for free and them profit off your find.

like The Donald said, It's not personal, it's business.

Good luck with it, Jim

W&E pays for Articles with Pics.

And my guess that's a Cover Coin

WOW Marc,What an awesome find!!!! My hat is off to you. That's truly what it's all about.I see a vacation to Jamaica in your future!Good thing you were relic hunting and running low discrimination or you may have missed it.In my group I have the distinction of finding the only half dime and two silver III cent pieces and they all have one thing in common I was running low disc..One spot was an area about 20'X30'I found a Mexican 1 reale a Spanish 1 reale an 1816 British .25c a Mexican dime a 1797 large cent and a knickerbocker 1c IOU. after scouring the area on med. high disc. on three different occasions I decided to go back and run low disc.and dig everything in case my disc. was too high for gold and sure enough I came up with a little junk and only one coin an 1852 silverIII cent and since I scoured the area so good on three different occasions I gotta assume my disc. was just too high.so now when I get in an area with mostly coins and little junk I always run low.Since then I've come up with another IIIc and a half dime using this method. Not trying to make this about me but just a tip for anyone reading who's wondering why they never find any half dimes or silver III cents.Once again great find and congrats!!!! SELL THAT SUCKER!!!! ;D

The history alone behind that coin makes it the best thing that I have ever seen posted or dug!!!! Awesome!!!!!! I would have likely died on the spot!

That coin is too valuable for eBay.
Should he decide to sell, he needs to go to Christie's or Sotheby's.

In reference to the article posted about the collector show with the half disme worth 1.5 mil....

"...less than 250 surviving specimens."

Make that "...less than 251 surviving specimens"

Re: Find Of A Lifetime!!!!!! 1792 Half Disme!

In support of the finder of this maginificent coin i would ask everyone to not rush him to getting more pictures. Im sure he is very busy researching how to sell/grade/preserve the coin and is probably contacting some pretty major acution companies, museusm, and dealers. AMAZING FIND CONGRATS AGAIN!

I would press the moderators of this forum to enact a privacy policy as stringent as confession at the catholic church. If not, very soon the tax man is going to show up at his door asking for 50% of the value or the coin if he can't come up with it. Seal the lips until you get to Christie's to sell.
