Neil, I truly am jealous... I managed a completely smooth copper, an 1886 IH, a nice mold cast early flower button and a few other buttons. That coin is truly spectacular, best condition of any coin I've seen our club members find. $2k plus find means you're sitting out the rest of the year right?? LOL!! Its also nice to see you and I on the banner together, DVRR is gonna kill it this year!! Stellar find, Gonna be seriously hard to ever beat....

Don in SJ said:
Neil !!!! WTG guy  It appears your coin is not one of the most two commonly found varieties, which is even better!! I think it matches the one on this link at Stacks. A LM-3 variety, the die crack seems to be a match, don't even think I have to bother looking at the rest of the features to confirm and do have a post out on a coin forum that should get verification sooner or later. But Stacks had it as a Rarity 5 in 2007, so it might still be in the Rare category$$$$.
Can't get much better than finding a Rare variety of a Rare coin!!

Don

Thanks everyone for your kind replies! 12 hours later and I am still in disbelief!

Don, as far as I can see, the coin does not appear to be very porous as some of my other lower silver content coins have looked. I have an 1851 Three Cent Piece that DOES appear a bit porous so I know what you meant.

That die crack is a dead giveaway to the variety....Needless to say I am glad it is not one of the more common varieties, but I would have been happy with one of those varieties just as well.

You can guess what my wife said when I told her the approximate value on a coin like this. She does not understand why I am not interested in selling it.

I am going to try to get some sleep tonight, but I have a feeling it is going to be a night of twisting and turning.
