Relic Hunting
I talked Dman into leaving his store and going relic hunting today because Tennessee Gun season starts Saturday for deer and the landowner hunts there. We did not want to mess his deer hunting up so it was now or wait until after December. We each found a few bullets at a U.S. CW site we have been hunting. Dman found a large brass pack or belt stud and a mint coat size Eagle "I" Button with shank intact. It looked like he had the find of the day. I started back to the truck and got a signal that was "iffy" but after Dman dug the button, I dug it. To my surprise, it was a CW Tenn veterans pin-I found an Indiana veterans pin about 3 years ago but was not sure that Tennessee Yankees had them. We left to get a bite to eat and I called a local relic dealer who said it was one of the rarest to recover along with Missouri and Wisconsin. The Tenn pin sells for $1,000. That made my day!!!! Dman will post his finds later. Happy Hunting from Tennessee!!!
This is a spot that we found late last spring. We do not believe it is a camp but rather a patrol rest area due to minimal melted lead. We have recovered 60+ bullets, 2 Eagle Buttons, A hodgkiss fuse, and other relics there.
ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS: The pic that Dman graciuosly made for me makes the pin look larger than it is. It is only 1.5" long and .5" wide. It has the remnants of 2 pin studs on each end. The pin was only 5" deep and was apparently resting perpendicular to the ground level. I got a signal of only the edge. The Indiana pin that I found read like a good CW Bullet. I was just lucky.
Thanks to all that read the post, replied, and sent messages. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours and HH.

Way to go. I thought the Kentucky was the rarest of them. I didn't even know there was a Tennessee Vets pin. That should be your find of the year.

C.S. buckles are more common.

You're Danged Right.

KY is pretty scarce. I have seen or held in my hand one from most of the states--including Missouri--at relic shows, but never even Seen a TN one before today.

Nice! Question though, is that part of a two piece, or complete as is?

It has the remnants on the back of a pin on each end and is one piece. I did research when I found the "IND" badge. After one year of enlistment in the union Army during the civil War, a soldier could purchase the pin for their state from a suttler's store. They could wear it and take it home after the war. The pins were private purchase and not government issued. The hardest to find are Tennessee, Iowa, Missouri, and Wisconsin according to Larry Hicklen at Middle Tennessee Civil War Relics. Thanks for your interest.
