The mystery black piece would drive me nuts...I love a good mystery and if I had found it I would pull it out all the time, take a good long look at it and ponder...hopefully someone recognizes the design and can offer a explanation why the metal is black. It doesn't look too melted to me...

Birky that Wayne's Legion is a rare and special find. That's a hell of a spot you have. Congrats

    Nice buttons...I like buttons

I hear you on getting out in early Feb on a freak temp swing, and deciding "which" site would be the best chance on a rare day of climate. I just found a unhunted site Thursday, but got snowed in Friday! Now I am retracing in my mind, where I didn't do a good job of sweeping. lol
Thanks CT Three years ago when I started detecting I never dreamt I would be able to dig such history here in Ohio..i'm still beside myself
I'm sorry you got froze out of your new ground, that is frustrating Looks like i'll also be feeling your pain this coming week. I did manage to make a last trip back to this site today though and didnt do too bad

Either way I'm thankful to just be digging at this time of year, even if it is only once or twice. Throw on top of that a few of the most amazing finds I'll probably ever make and i'm one happy fella!

HH and here's to a short winter!

Thank you OX and I 100% agree that the button is the real prize here. I still can't get over it!
I knew it would never make the banner but your vote was extremely kind

You're absolutely correct it's driving me nuts! I've stared at it more times and in more ways than I care to admit
It got even worse when I went back for the second hunt and found another one The second one is a bit more convincing of course..and still indescript enough for my level of experience to decipher..

Will post pics from that hunt this evening if I get the chance.

I'll bet it would make banner if you took a nice cropped photo of it and added to the original post
