Sparkymaster, That's an amazing find. Good detecting and a story well told, reminds me of the tales of another Hero of mine, Huckleberry Finn.

I think I would have dragged the log piece home and kept it heh heh. Kind of like a trophy. Maybe cut out the section just above and below where the hollow part was.
