Hi nice hoard of coins you found, try useing a tumbler to
clean them up, i'm not shure what compound to use but
lots of people use imprenated corn cob medium to clean
up fired brass ie. pistol and rifle shells.

Is there a silver count on the hoard yet?

Try going to coin + jewelry but knocking sens WAY back, so a quarter air tests at 3-4 inches. If gold watch globs near surface somewhere you might find 'em this way...better a chance at something than running flat out with no chance at all. It's completely counter intitutive for a dectorist to make machine go shallower on purpose, but it's worked for me in several impossible sites...pulling a few keepers instead of nothing at all...as low as 10% sens in one case. Running sens very low "lights up" fewer junk targets for detector to deal with, makes it a little easier to pick apart near surface junk.

Cool horde, ;D I bet a electrolysis unit will work real well on the melted plastic. :o You can make one at home you can find out how somewhere here on Tnet. I don't know how other than max discrimination you could find coins and jewelery through all that trash. Only problem is you can't find gold in max discrimination. So to find those watches... ??? That's a task.... :'(

Keep @ it and HH!!

Holy Sh!!!

That is an awesome site, and sight! That sifter and shovel may turn up some other cool stuff too! This might turn up the watches as well. We had a house burn down in the 80's, and lost a ton of stuff we never found. I didn't know beans about MD'ing then, or I could have recovered more.

I agree to wear a mask though!

Can't wait for the final count, although it looks like alot of hunting to be done yet!

What a GREAT stasharoo. Great story, great post, great photos.
How old is the house site? If you get a chance run your coil around parts of the yard for and hour or two and get some samples. The foundation and ash pit is no doubt where all the the goodies are, but I am sure there are lots of us that would like to know what kind of targets you might find in the ground.
This place is going to take some time, but time well spent.
Thanks for the post and the photos. Good luck and HH. Highwater

Absolutely great detecting!

Hey, since you're so stationary, any chance of taking a video camera out and setting it up on a tripod? At least you'll have a video to watch later...and keep watchin'...again....again....and again.....

Congrats,
Cavers5

I'm taking Thursday and Friday off work to hit some of the grassy area before the freeze comes. Late 1800's home site.

I thought about the video cam thing, but I don't have one. I might be able to borrow one though. Good suggestion.

Thanks.

I'm sure you'll let us know when you find those watches. The owners could probably also tip you off to some other great sites.

A truly awesome find! What a stroke of luck! As you pick up more and more of the signals you should be able to increase the sensitivity. I would attempt to move the metal junk away from the basement (after detecting the area you move them to). Would love to find a place like that...way to be at the right place at the right time! Congrats, big time! :o

Kas, I am voting for the burning suggestion. A little propane torch should loosen the clump without harming the coins. I also think that the warning about the fumes was wise. Be careful. Sometimes treasure hunting boils down to plain, hard work. Congratulations.

Re: Large hoard found in ashes. UPDATE- Site Pics and more coins.

Found one of the pocket watches today, in more than one piece. Gave it to the new owner, and he gave it to the old owner. He called me back and said they said they didn't want anything else. ;D

Also found 40 more coins in the ash and this little old lock in the yard after a short hunt.

Hope your luck holds, and you are able to find the other watch, and it is in better shape than the one you found today. What's your running total on coin count so far? Silver?
Man, you have really found a "gold mine". WTG
