Hey gang. Hadn't planned to go where I went today, didn't even know about the site until this morning.

Making a very long story somewhat shorter, I found an empty lot to hunt. Went today and found a few coins. There was a guy there cleaning up the lot, not the owner, who said he had just boughten a property out in the country where the house burnt down. He said it burnt down about a year ago and he bought it. The poeple who owned it said that they had left 2 old gold pocket watches inside and that if he found them they'd like them back. Did I want to look for them he asked me. He also said that I could hunt the property, and that I could keep anything but jewelry and the watches.

SURE! I headed out there to look around. Nice large property. House burnt clear down to ashes, no roof, nothing but a foundation filled with ashes. I wasn't sure I wanted to trapse through all the wet ashes, but it had been like this for a year. Hardly any smell of burnt at all. I put my detector on coin only because of all the trash, and that's when all hell broke loose.

I started digging coin after coins out of the ash, and found a plastic tub full of coins. Here's a few pics so far. I'll get a total count later. There are still coins to find, but I got tired of digging, but the tones are still there. I'll estimate that I've removed around 500 hundred coins today in about two hours.
I doubt that any are old, and haven't searched them, and some are stuck together as you can see in the picture. But, it's a bunch of coins. Should I be calling this a cache. Well to me it is. I haven't even touched the yard yet. More pics later.

Ken

Re: Large cache found in ashes.

Holy crap! That's a great place to look and you could have a gold mine there. Good luck with the rest of your hunting and take your sweet time!

I'm pretty sure a cache is meant to be hidden so no one can find it (except the person who hid it). I think "hoard" (accumulation) is more accurate terminology for your find. Either way you still have a load of coin to take home with you.

Nat

Okay hoard. At least two of the half dollars I can see are 1964's. So I have some silver.

More pics of opening of plastic container. Will get better pics later.

NIce hoard find - I can see it now they have a butter tub in a dresser drawer where they throw all their coins and then one night blamo! the fire takes the house and the coins drop to where you find them. Congrats and I wouldn't be surprised if you find a couple old coins in there too.

nice hoard. Just think the owner whos house burnt down probably metal detected and that was his stash of finds. He couldn't go back and recover any of it because his MD burnt up in the fire too.

lol..probably not

Ken, I wish I could tell you how to get melted plastic off coins but I have no clue..maybe someone here has an idea.

Again best of luck, that's a great discovery.

Awesome find. I keep my coins (from change) in a 5 gallon jug. There's about 600 dollars in there should my house burn down. Get the detector out if it does. ;) ;D No key dates though. :D

Acetone should take care of that conglomerate. Just soak it in a tub of the stuff for about 10-30 minutes should be plenty of time to disolve the plastic but leave the coins.

Nate, that's not plastic, it's encrusted ash and plaster or something. Almost like rock. I found the clump on the floor by itself.
The coins in the plastic container came out the best of all the coins.

I'm not even done. I'm taking more time off work and making a screen to filter out the ash. I called my boss and told him what happened. He said he would go back instead of working too. LOL. He's real cool.
