By 1860 all british regiments had left the colonlies of Australia and local rifle and light horse regiments sprung up in all 5 colonies. The colonies had well armed troopers and police but lacked numbers.By 1861 Victoria and New South Wales had some 25,000 foot soldiers and 10,000 calvary and field guns [Armstrongs 6 pounders and 12 pounders].Nearly all where volunteers.

In december last year i found a silver New South Wales Volunteer Riflemans Button(1875) at a new site.Due to working long hours i have not had a chance to return to the site, untill this weekend.

Well the site seems to be a dump dating from about 1875 till 1919 and is quite shallow.the whole area covers about 500 square yards and i have been digging like mad to cover as much as possible.

I was there last night for 4 hours and 9 hours today and going back tomorrow. ;D ;D ;D.Will post some site pics tomorrow night.

First i would like to thank Gypsy for helping I.D the Colonial Helmet Plate. This relic turned out to be a regiment plate and not a general service one.yes would be considered rare.

Finds are Colony of Victoria Volunteer Cadets Corp Officers helmet plate 1868
Colony of New South Wales Silver {Stokes} Silver Volunteers Rifles Button 1875
Victorian Era ornate Buckle 1860's
Victorian Era ornate silver grooming brush handle [damaged]
5 silver coins 2 english shilling cira 1907 and 2 australia shilling 1920 and a big fat Queen Victoria Crown[young head] well worn and no date
relics clay cornish pipe shards, martini shell broken Ink wells of the desk hole type ,pressed copper embossed button and small silver bird pin damaged few silver pocket-watch cases, clay marble

3 inch shape ?????? and St mathews religous medal [quit large ]

thanks for looking and yes i hope to find something GOLD "gee i dream on" LOL

Thanks for the reply Jimmy,Finding productive sites is always harder to find than the finds. This has been many hours of hard work.Thats the only helmet plate i have ever found.

thanks harry but i,m going to run out of time at this site. The site is still public land but the folks down at the town hall are selling it for sub-division housing .Theres a few survey pegs down one end and no doubt service and road contractors will put a road right threw the middle of it.Mit get the long weekend and by be Easter. After that the site will be off limits.Public works are fenced once the work starts and are out of bounds.Work-safe issues.Cannot stop progess just find some where else.Did get permission to hunt a 1872 home on the Back Creek.First private site i got this year.Yes the horror of gal roofing nails. These sites have hundreds of them.Makes hard to define signal.Thats all i have left at the moment.
