Question in locating a site

So I have been metal detecting a farm that was settled around 1798 about an hour south of Louisville, Ky. It has a newer home that was built onto a log cabin as well as remnants of a small tavern that was ran in the early 1800's. I have found some great metal detecting finds...but my question is how in the world do I start to try to figure out where a dump might have been? It's about 50 yards from a creek surrounded by farm land to the left and right and hills and woods behind it. I've never thought about trying to find it but I think it would be a blast and probably produce some interesting finds. Any help would be great.

You might check along the creek bank preferably downstream from the house site. Look for bottles sticking out of the bank, 2nd spot is the woods. Out of sight, out of mind-per se.

Behind the house and in the woods is another probable locale. Metal detect any natural depressions for old cans and the bottles should be underneath. Of course not that far from the house. Small gullies and ravines are also a probable spot. Harder to find would be the old outhouse hole where many bottles ended up. If you do find it though the digging is easy!

I agree with all of Stoney's suggestions. It was common in the early 1800s to dump in the creeks and waterways. in the 1850s (or thereabouts) we suddenly realized dumping in and around the water wasn't really a good thing.
