Privy's weren't usually that close to the house. That would be rather tough on the olfactory system........;-)

Oh, no sorry my apologies, the depression isn't right behind where the door would have been. What I meant to say was, it is in the area behind where the back door would have been. It is about 40 to 50 ft away.

Get a long probe and gently probe the edges of the depression, check the soil that comes up with the probe, the darker the better, if no sound of glass near the top, it probably is a privy..........................................RR
