What were these crocks used for?

I found these at an garage sale and wondered what they were used for? I know that they were some kind of canning jar but for what? They both have such small mouths and bulbous bodies. You couldn't put anything that wasn't cut up small into these/and were they sealed with wax? Or were they for something liquid?
The largest measures 9" tall 8" across, and the opening is 2 1/2".
The other one is 8" tall and 6" across, and the opening is 1 3/4" on this one.
I paid $1.00 for both!! The man I bought them from was a "garbage man" .
Thanks for looking and any help with what they were used for would be appreciated!
    regards~~sandcreek

Nice pieces. I believe they were generic, anything could be put into them, then labeled accordingly....

    Thanks for that info, gleaner.
You can tell they have been used because of the buildup of wax(?) around the lip.
I just wondered what they were used for (liquids?) because of the small openings.

They look like decorative pottery pieces to me, also looks like stoneware maybe. Are the insides glazed or matte? No markings Im take it?

    Looks like ovoid stoneware.

Used for all kinds of liquids - including beer and vinegars.

No markings on them. The bottom of both have "lines" across.
I think they are stoneware as they are very heavy.
The insides are glazed and I can see "rings", like maybe they are hand-thrown.
Wonder what caused the discoloration of the glaze in the shoulder area? Does that happen in the kiln sometimes?
Here's some more pics of the biggest one, diggummup, see what you think.
    Thanks for the comments~~sandcreek

They look real similar to tiger whiskeys. We dug plenty of this similar pottery in a part of Denver that was the Chinese section in the 1880's.
