Question about an old bottle I found

I have an old bottle that appears to be an old ale bottle or wine bottle. It is dark green and pretty heavy. The question I have is why did the maker put an inverted cone in the bottom of the bottle? If you look at the bottom of the bottle, the glass goes back up into the bottle in a cone shape. Not sure why they would do that. I will post a pic of it soon.

Thanks for any info as I am new to bottle collecting.
