    Bottles Identification 101

    Stoppers and Closures

    Cork 600 bc
    Mason top screw w/ zinc or glass lined lid 1858-

    Screw type with metal closure Late 19th century
    Glass ball inside bottle 1873-

    Jar w/glass lid held on by metal clamp and wire bail 1882-

    "Hutchinson "stopper,wire loop holding rubber gasket
    inside the bottle,
    the original "pop" bottle 1878-

    Metal cap w/neckband over cork 1880-

    Lightening stopped vucanized rubber plug on bail (beer) 1880-
    Crown Top ,metal cap w/crimped edge 1891-

    Bottoms and Bases

    Pontil Mark Prehistoric to 1860's Rough scar
    Graphite Pontil 1850-1890 Smoother scar w/metallic iron black deposits
    Wine bottle push up base before 1880 Pushup pontil mark
    Slight ring on base, molded in after 1903 mark left by automation machine

    Thanx for the info GYPSY. This is the most comprehensive I've seen to http://www.blm.gov/historic_bottles/index.htmdate for bottle info.
