    POTOMAC RIVER BOTTLE

My father found this bottle while building a bridge,in the early 50s , across the Potomac in D.C. It's been in his barn since I liberated it last year.It came up in a bucket of sediment while dippping it from the river with a crane. It's 13'' tall and 2 and 3/8'' diameter at the bottom.I've tried to educate myself through Harrys tutorials on this site, but I'm just not as sure as I would like to be on identifying this particular bottle. There are no marks as to suggest a maker since I believe it is hand blown but from what time period I guess is my question .Thanks for looking !

My impression is that these bottles were used for olive oil.

Yep, that's an olive oil bottle all right! I've dug up dozens of those in dumps ranging from the late 1890's to around 1915.

It could be older than that, but since I don't have experience with older dumps, I really couldn't say
