I was going through some boxes of stuff from my first digs yesterday, culling out some things that seemed swell at the time, but were unembossed & undistinguished. I came upon a small box of metal finds that I had forgotten about. These were all eyeballed from the privies & trash pit of an old tavern site.

The little copper bottle is the only one of it's kind that I have dug.

Sweet! Any idea what it is? So what kind of bottles did you get from that dig?

Hey ba,

I've no idea what the copper bottle contained. I'm open to suggestions.

The site was occupied a very long time, and was situated at the base of a bluff right off the site of 3 generations of a bridge. There was a hill dump as well as the privies and dumps of the tavern and surrounding hovels.

My first visit with my then little kids, turned up yjis little pumpkin for #1 son.

Lemme look around for some photos. Meanwhile here's a small chorus line.

The most memorable finds from this dig were not the bottles, but the odd things, those unexpected, and delightful little items.

My favorite dug items to date are the dominoes that came from this dig. They're child size, or made for a much smaller hand. I think that middle one could use a little mineral oil.

This site also had a cornucopia of pipes.

I can understand what you mean. Sometimes its the unexpected things that makes the outing so memorable. I guess thats why we love going out and digging up history. Its the "never knowing what you are going to find" that attracts us to these hobbies. I really like that pumpkin. Thanks for sharing

Thanks for that unclemac,

I did a little looking around and found that Prosser buttons seem to cover a lot of ground.

Here's a couple British blackings.

Hey surf, those 2 guys on the porch of the Foote and Jenks drugstore look like they are making a pretty good living. They appear to be proud of that little establishment.

Hey ba,

I think you're right about that. Both Foote & Jenks should be proud. The company is still going strong.

"Mark Twain was publishing “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” the Brooklyn Bridge was celebrating its first anniversary, Grover Cleveland was president, the cornerstone was laid for the Statue of Liberty, and Messrs. Foote and Jenks began producing their fine flavors. The year? 1884.

Two young pharmacists, Charles E. Foote and Charles C. Jenks, began to manufacture lotions, perfumes, and extracts for their pharmacy customers. The superiority of their products soon attracted the attention of the budding dairy, candy, and soft drink industries. Sales to these manufacturers grew so great that by 1900 Foote & Jenks retail sales were ceased.

Through World War I, the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression, and World War II, Foote & Jenks continued the development and manufacture of flavors and fragrances. When “Lucky Strike Green went to War” so did Foote & Jenks with C rations coffee drinks, chocolate drinks, candy, and sweet cookies..." Foote & Jenks Corporation

Pharmacists Charles E. Foote and Charles C. Jenks, pictured here,
opened this drug store at 216 W. Michigan Ave. on April 4, 1884.
Based on their inventions, the company soon grew into Foote & Jenks,
a major manufacturer of food flavorings.
Foote & Jenks' flavor empire started with small store in Jackson

I have 2 words: AWE SOME !! I could conversate this type of history all day long with you. I love this stuff. I could sit in a pub and drink some dark draft beer and discuss history all day and night. I can't get enough of it. I studied my local region' s history for so long, one of the local high school history teachers would call me up and ask me questions about our area. Lol. Nice post Honorable Surf.
