Found this the other day at a local TOC dump. Been posting other dump finds in Today's Finds, but I thought I'd share with you guys too.

1858 mason jar.png

From what I can gather, John Mason patented the screw-top for fruit jars on Nov. 30, 1858. Any glassmaker who wanted to license the patent had to put "Mason's Patent Nov 30 1858" on their jars. As the 1870s came, more companies licensed the patent and started putting little logos on and around the patent phrase. In 1878 after the patent expired, the phrase was omitted altogether. Since this has the phrase but no logos, I believe this to be one of the older ones.

A few days before that, I found this (our second) cool green Ball jar, this one is from 1896 - 1910:

Scotk9 and I also find quite a number of condiment, soda, beer, and liquor bottles in this dump area.
And 2 Graniteware pots.
And several horseshoes.
And chinaware shards. Lots of them.
And an alligator snapping turtle.
And 19 deer, one day.
And the occasional plated silverware.
Plus an ornate copper/brass door plate.
Hinges. Lots of different hinges.
Vinegar bottles. Olive bottles. Pickle jars.
Toasted cans, most of them are shaped like paint cans but who knows.

Those are amazing! Please post them all here from now on. Or at least on both of them. I love seeing that eye candy! Great finds man and I hope you have many more to come.

lol i'm not so much a bottle guy so I'd love to find more artifacts than glass in this hole, but I must admit that some of the glass we pull is pretty intriguing... With exception to the Ball jars, which I will likely keep, anything you see me post is totally available... just PM me an offer and we can go from there.

EDIT: When the older one is clean I'll get some natural light pics for y'all. The old one has this oily film crap all over it that my friend is soaking in aluminum siding cleaner for me.

Since the weather is improving lately, when the old one is clean, I'll get pics of all my jars in natural light for you guys. There's 9 total: 4 mason jars & 5 soda bottles.

If the jar didn't have a number on the bottom of jar would it be safe to say it's a fake/reproduction?

This is the jar we found yesterday.
