New Blob I Found

Just wanted to share a new blob top I found yesterday at my trusty bottle dump in the river. I was tromping through the normal knee deep mud and was about to go home when my leg sank a little bit deeper, and my foot touched glass. I reached in and pulled out this beauty. It has that white film that sorta comes out with scrubbing. Nothin a little oil can't fix. It's embossed MINERAL WATER HONESDALE GLASSWORKS AP (P is backwards). It's supposed to be PA but there's an error. I'd love to have more info on it if anyone has some. Thanks for looking.

The Honesdale Glass Works operated under that name from 1856 to January of 1861 when the factory was destroyed by the flood resulting from a breeched dam upstream (Barbe & Reed 2003). The majority of soda and mineral water bottles made during this time period have iron pontil scars on the base. The late 1850s and early 1860s was, however, the heart of the transition period from pontil rods to non-scarring snap case tools, one of which was certainly used in the production of this bottle.

Sorry to resurrect a dead thread, but I've been wondering for a while. This blob was found in water, where it had been for about a decade and a half. Most bottles from this period have iron pontils. Is it possible for the iron to be worn off over time? The reason I ask is because there is an abrasive patch in the middle of the base, and it has a narrow, circular indentation. I hope I explained that clearly. I'll post pictures in a bit.

This is a very nice find, bhofcc. I don't remember seeing this the first go round, so I'm happy to see it now.

Looks like it might be an iron pontil, very nice find. I think you meant a century and a half not a decade and a half. Again very nice bottle.
