Hopefully someone can help me solve this mystery. I bought this blown tumbler for a few dollars. What really intrigued me is that the pontil on the base has iron residue in it. I know that blown tumblers are made often nowadays but I can't believe they would iron pontil them. Does anyone know? I am sure that the pontil has iron. Thanks! After doing more research I think this is probably modern Mexican glass but I still can't understand why there's iron residue on the base.

I see a glass-tipped, solid rod pontil mark. After many vessels are blown, the end of the iron pontil rod, subjected to high temperatures due to repeated contact with molten glass, oxidizes. So, every once in awhile, the scale comes off the end of the iron rod along with the glass it was dipped in for adhesion to the bottom of the vessel. That is why you occasionally find iron oxide in open (blowpipe) and solid rod pontil marks.
