any way to date this crock??

ok, let me start by saying I hope this isnt a stupid question, I am guessing there is no way to date something like this withough having some kind of markings but we cant find any... my newphew was walking the creek behind there house and found it eroding out of the side of the bank, was bareley sticking out, any help on where to maybe look for markings or age or use appreciated!

    thank you!

A general rule of thumb is: if the interior is not glazed (like the exterior), then it is normally pre-1900. I know it doesn't always apply, but pottery folks tell me it is a good place to start.
