Found A Trash Pit In My Yard A Couple Months Ago AND Got 16 Bottles But Had To FILL In To Fall. Wife didn't like big hole by sidewalk lol. Most were 1890s -1910. Got bored today and started probing on the other side of yard. And hit another pit. I dug a 5 ft circle about 4 ft deep. Only go two bottles. A 1890s medicine bottle and I think around 1900 pabst Milwaukee bottle. Dug at least 2 bushels of cl and oyster shells. This pit has a lot less glass but at least I can dig and only 10ft from house.

For the outside just take a damp cloth and to add a little bit of shine to them apply a dab of Vaseline and then take a dry cloth and wipe the Vaseline off, will give a very nice shine

Thanks , I'll try the vasoline trick. I may dig depper tomorrow but this pit seems top stop at 3 ft. Clear out the shells and probe and don't hit anything. The other pit in the yard I was dragging bottles out with my shovel about 5 ft. Both pits start filling with water around 3 ft. Just scrape around and the bottles float up.

Awesome, that's so exciting, right in your own backyard!

You gotta keep diggin'! Probe around those spots and you might find that the pit is deeper and/or broader than you think, or that there are even privies in those spots. Sometimes they fill the privy with ash and food waste before finally putting the dirt on top. You can sometimes find bottles only a foot down into a privy.

Good luck and let us know what you find!

A trick that we have used to clean the inside of bottles is to add some warm-to-hot water and a little dish soap, then add some pieces of toothpicks cut into 1/4" length pieces. Shake vigorously, rinse and let dry. If the dirt still remains, repeat the process while substituting fine sand for the toothpicks. Do not use coarse sand IF AT ALL POSSIBLE, as coarse sand can scratch the glass.

Nice find!!

Same as kcm but instead of toothpicks, i skin and chop a common electrical copper wire in smalls bits.

When you start digging again, go back to where you were digging when you posted the first picture. Dig straight down 2-3 ft there and let us know the outcome
