Advice for a rookie

Several years ago we purchased a farm with creeks on it. This one particular creek has bottles that show up every spring. I have looked with a probe for the privy with no success. Last week I noticed what appeared to be the bottom of a bottle in the bank of the creek. Sure enough, there was a whole bottle! Then the other day I noticed two bricks sticking out of the bank in that same spot. I pulled them out and dug a little and ended up pulling three whole bottles from that spot along with a partial bottle, broken glass, pottery shards, and what appears to be a couple of fence post pieces. Could this be where the privy dumps out into the creek? Or could this be a dumpsite that has been covered up with dirt? Also, should I keep partial bottles? Another creek on the property has turned up a couple bottles this year, but mostly broken pieces. Besides bottles, is there anything else I should keep my eye out for? Also, what is the best way to clean these bottles?

It would be useful to know where in the world you live.
In some farming areas, it was common to dump durable debris in a gully to slow erosion. The debris inevitably was buried by accumulating sediment.

It could be a dump. Dig into the wall that you found the debris in and see what else comes out! Or, it's possible that the dump is a little further upstream.

This one looks exactly like the one I found in the peace river my best guess is a corked whiskey bottle. Mine was found in Arcadia Fl.

I just pulled these out of the creek. One is a bromo seltzer bottle. The other appears to be a weight of some sort.

That "weight" thing is junk, you can throw that out. It's one cell of a car battery.

The Bromo is cool though! You've been finding some good early ABM and late-blown bottles, so that's worth digging in my books. You've gotta walk upstream until you stop finding glass, and then look around to try and find the source of all these bottles. Keep us posted, and good luck!

The weather has cooled down so I decided to attack the honey hole.

All of the bank is overhang. There's water back in there.

So I dug, scraped, and shoveled for an hour or so.

Alas, all I got was trash! LOL!
