The origin of the wine bottle
Most people must be curious why wines are bottled by glass bottle instead of cans or plastic bottles.

Wine first appeared 6000 years ago, when the craft of glass or iron were not developed, . At that time most wine is mainly packed in the ceramic pot. Around 3000 BC, glass products began to appear, this time, some high-end glass were produced from glass. Compared to the original porcelain glass, glass can bring a better taste of wine. But the wine was still packed in a ceramic pot. Because the craft of glass manufacturing was not good, all the glass bottles were very fragile, which were not easy to transport nor good for storage. At the time of the seventeenth century, an important invention emerged - a coal-fired furnace, which greatly improved the temperature at which the glass was made, allowing people to produce more thickened glass. With the oak stopper, glass bottles succeeded in replacing the previous ceramic pot. And today, the glass bottle has not been replaced by iron cans or plastic bottles, firstly, because of the historical tradition; secondly, because the glass bottle stability is excellent which keep quality of wine good; Thridly, is the glass and oak The perfect match of wine & cork provides the vintage charm of the bottle.

The feature of Wine bottles

Most wine lovers can tell the feature of wine bottles: green bottle for red wine, clear/flint for white wine, 750 ml, punt at the bottom

Let us talk about the color firstly. As early as the 17th century, the color of the wine bottle was green, which is limited by the craft of bottle manufacturing; the bottle produced with many impurities, so the bottle showing in green. And later, people found that dark green wine bottle helps to prevent the wine in the bottle from light, contribute to the vintage of wine, so most wine bottle were made in dark green. And for white wine and pink wine is generally bottled in a transparent bottle, by which can fresh people by seeing the color of the white wine & pink wine.

Let’s move on to the next-capacity. the capacity of the bottle is determined by many factors. One of the reasons is from the 17th century, when the bottle was produced by glass-blower. Due to lung capacity of the glass-blower, the size of the wine bottle can be produced between 600-800 ml. The second reason is the emerge of the standard size of the oak barrel: when the small oak barrel for shipment was set as 225 liters, the EU set the wine bottle capacity as 750ml in the 20th century, so that a small oak barrel just fill 300 bottles of wine, fit into 24 boxes. Another reason is that some people think that 750 ml can fill15 cups of 50 ml of wine, suitable for a family a meal amount.

Finally, we come to the punt, which people always mystify, believing that the deeper of the punt, the higher the wine quality. In fact, the depth of the bottom of the punt and the wine quality is not necessarily linked. Some of the bottles are designed to allow the sink to concentrate around the bottle and to be easily removed during ?. With the upgrading of the modern brewing process, the wine dregs can be directly filtered out during the brewing process, so there is no need for punt to remove the precipitate. For this reason, the punt can facilitate the wine storage, if the bottom of the wine bottle is not flat, then the bottle is difficult to stabilize. But with the upgrading of the manufacturing process, the problem has been resolved, so that the bottom of the bottle and the quality of the groove is not necessarily linked. Many wineries still keep the punt for traditions.
