Here are a few of the porcelain stoppers I have found while bottle digging. In some cases I have bottles to go with them and in others I was able to only locate pieces of the broken bottles 002.JPG 003.JPG

They are generally referred to as Hutter stoppers. Karl Hutter had a patent on them in the 1890's .A wire went through a hole in the side of the stopper and there was a wire harness that was around the neck of the bottle .By moving the wire you could seal the stopper in the top of the bottle .In most cases they where used with the Blobtop bottle .However I am no expert on the history of them so maybe others have additional info .

epackage I am still new to Treasurenet .I first signed up last July .I quickly learned that many of the people here have a lot more experience and knowledge about the many aspects of all the things connected to treasure hunting . I join to learn and I hope to add something to the site if I can. If you have time can you post a few pictures of some of your bottles and stoppers

One batch I got a few years ago, many matching styles, I have about 20 different ones altogether from Paterson N.J.. It's the only city I collect bottles and stoneware from...

Thanks to both of you .Some of mine have probably be in the ground 80 to 100 years and the ink is still pretty good
The ink is typically fired on with the glaze, so many of them hold up well even when in the ground for 100+ years, good luck finding more...
