Just got back from a nice little vacation with the family in Florida and was aching to get back to some digging. So I started out doing the small little trash area near where the Detroit Ink was. I only found one bottle. A Kemp’s Balsam. No biggie but I’ll take it. After finishing this up we jumped the fence to the next yard over. A circa 1878 home. Hoping for the best we started probing. Whew what a bunch of holes we poked with no sign of a privy.

Finally came across a very suspect area so we open the Earth up only to find a barrel full of cement chunks. Who the heck buried that? No clue what the reason was for that. So another hour kinda wasted. But we marked that spot off and had to move the west side of the yard. The probing was tough and another 50 spots marked off with nothing. Ugh.

Then I finally felt something that was needing more investigation pokes. Whalla!!!! We got one. Had the 4 foot probe and couldn’t feel the bottom of course but there was some strata layering which is good. So we marked it out as best we could and started to dig. Got down about 3 feet and probed again. Still no bottom, yikes. Then he hit a foundation wall or something and we thought are we in an old basement or what? But then Don found the rotted away remnants of the wood wall and corner post. Yeah. And so we trudged further. Got down to about 8 feet and out pops a Pontil puff with no embossing. Looks good so far. Then a pile of seeds. That confirmed it. Under a layer of pebbles and sandy dirt was the use layer. I found a couple smaller bottles from the 1890 era. Don got in and promptly pulled out an nice heavy Lindsey’s Blood Searcher. Sweet. First one whole for us. At this point we were approaching 9 feet deep.

Vertigo gets to ya now! Yikes. Pretty solid walls though so not to worried about collapse. I finally got an embossed Ayers and then another. And finally a bottle we have never seen. Dr. Crams Fluid Lightning from Chicago. Cool little bottle with not much info found on it. The a Dr. Lichtenberger pharmacy bottle. Nice. We were both pretty smoked at this point. It was around 80 with zero breeze.

I was down towards the corner and out pops a cool J A Lagrange ginger beer. It has a surface crack that doesn’t go through all the way. Very nice find in my book. Don got back in and was clearing some clay marbles and some shattered Indian Sagwa bottles before he was wiped out. We took a bit of a break before finishing up. I got back down in and the last bottle to show it’s face was a nice brilliant perfect Dr. Eliels Liver Regulator in cobalt. Great way to finish up. I did find an unembossed amber beer that was just too cool to toss back. So I brought it home and cleaned it up a bit too see that it has some sort of whittle or embossed numbers on one side. Never seen that before.

All in All it was a great day of digging and we got a few keepers. Hope you enjoy the pics. Goodluck out there and be safe. Jgas. Anyone with a clue as to what this embossing might be? Thanks. Jgas.

It looks like the beer might have had the mold embossing filled in (aka. peened out). It is hard to tell but looks like it might have been "THIS BOTTLE / NOT TO BE / SOLD" or one of the similar disclaimers?

I love the Lindsey's Blood Searcher, crock beer, and the long neck cobalt med !!

Super post jgas. The cobalt liver regulator is awesome. Dang it, what a beautiful bottle. The blood searcher is also a good one ( I love these quack medicines.. my favorites) I can see why you kept the ginger beer, the dark color is great. I’m kinda on the side with redbeardrelics, I think that beer with the strange embossing is a mold that was filled in. You guys rock! Great day of digging and I can’t thank you enough for all the photos. Great post! Keep slinging dirt

Thanks for the replies everyone. I believe you guys are correct with the mold issue on the beer. Kinda neat still. I kept it and may make a drinking glass out of it. Looks like the ginger beer might be a new variant for this particular name. So that’s awesome too. Thanks again for the replies everyone. Jgas.

I wouldn't make it into a drinking glass if it's not damaged though. It's something you don't see very often and it's a great example. I think it'd be beneficial to keep it the way it is so that more people can learn from it. There are far better candidates for drinking glasses!

NJK, after your consultation I would agree. I may have my buddy try to lightly tumble it. It is a cool older beer. Thought it was gonna be a anheiser Busch when I first pulled it out. Jgas.

Wow, great recoveries! Isn't there a danger of that excavation caving in on you? Looks kind of dangerous. The good news is that if you fall off the ladder, they'll know where to find you.

Very nice jgas. I would love to see how it's done from start to finish. I know my town is full of old privy's. Congrats on the rewards that you rescued.
