Huge bottle dump found!!!!!
Hello folks!
Note: I originally posted this in the "today's finds" forum, but thought the people here might also like to see the pics of this place I found.
____________________________________________
I had an interesting time the past few days. Forum member "Levi'sdad" came down my way to visit for a few days. We hit a few detecting spots and found a couple neat things. The best I found was a silver war nickle (didn't hit the jackpot, but silver is nice anyway). The highlight wasn't detecting though. I recently found out where the old city dump is located. The town dates from around 1820, and the dump seems to have started somewhere in the mid 1800s and ended maybe in the '20s. There are very few screw cap bottles there. The dump is probably over 3/4 mile long and in the woods. We hunted at what seems to be the most recent end of the dump. I found old bottles (blobtops, hutchings, etc...) at the other end, but it's grown up too high. We may hit it when the weather knocks back the undergrowth.
We met up with another forum member "offcenter" (he and I are the ones who located this dump), and took off to the woods. The first time we discovered the spot, we parked so far away that once we found the dump, we had hardly any time to hunt because it was about to get dark. The hike back was killer. This time, we parked at a closer spot, but still had to hike in a little ways.
Anyway, here are some pictures of the area. Offcenter is holding up a bottle to admire it. Levisdad is looking for a spot to put down the backpack. You can see how thick the bottles are. Many are right on top, and seem to go down about 12 to 16 inches in the ground at this end of the dump. Deeper at the older end. The bottles are on the ground like this all over, for a loooong way through the woods. Offcenter found a broken blue poison bottle that would have been awesome. He did find a complete one on the trip when we discovered the dump. I found the broken pottery jug top. There are lots of these type jugs, large and small, all broken.
Hope you enjoy the pics. We had a great time!

Re: Huge bottle dump found!!!!!
treat it like a archaeological dig. You are sure to find some great bottles. Good luck!
Just because it did not work does not mean it was not a good plan!

Re: Huge bottle dump found!!!!!
The age of your dump appears to be 1910-1920.Dig deeper might put you in the 1890-1900 era.I was digging in a 1910 dump and started finding some civil war items, sword buckle, belt buckle and buttons.I got to thinking how these items ended up in a 1910 dump. Then it hit me,vetrans of the civil war were dying about this time, probably one died and most of his personal belonging were tossed out.
