False signals - am I doing something wrong?

Hi All,

I just took my new Discovery 2200 out into the backyard for the first time, and I got nothing but false signals everywhere I swung it. I tried swinging it fast and slow, almost touching the ground to 3" or 4" above the ground. It has four different tones for different metals, and I was hearing all of them. A couple of times it acted like it found something, but I dug and there was nothing there. But most times it just beeped randomly, in no pattern that I could see. Am I doing something wrong? Could the detector be defective? The ground is wet from rain, could that be causing it? Does the ground have to be dry? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I tried a bench test, and it seemed to operate properly. It was pretty accurate with a nail, penny, dime and quarter. I threw the penny on the ground outside, and it definitely "found" it. But it still gave me false readings all around the penny.

read thru the owners manual and watch the DVD(if has one)

make sure all the connecting cords are secure and not flopping around.

maybe call the place u bought it from if the other 2 things dont work.

Yep, if your coil cable is flopping around the detector will "detect" it, too. The coil's cable should be wrapped around the shaft and held snug to it with some kind of tie. Most manufacturers enclose a loop and hook retainer.
Another possibility is the Sens is set too high. If you can adjust it, turn it down some and if the Disc is adjustable, adjust it just to the point that a poptop makes it "pop" or "snap" a little bit without fully sounding off. (this adjustment can be done at the bench)

Try reducing your sensitivity , its the main issue with false signals and highly mineralized soil just makes it worst .. Start at 2 bars and go up from there , also make sure you knotch out the iron , most of the false signals are in the iron range ..

Means either interference or the relic is deep. Many people I detect with they expect the item to be near the surface, they will dig 2 or 3 inches and then call it a false signal and move on. BH's can go 8 - 12" deep, so you really need to dig deep. But yeah if it beeps everywhere and doesn't shut up then it's interference.

Could easily be electricial interference from something newr your house.....
